Hike #36: Foot arch

When
Sunday, 2015-05-10
Where
Shadow Mountain, from the 28th St Trailhead
Duration
½ hour
Notable
Possibly overdid it today

I blame my latest onset of Achilles' tendinosis on a five-mile run I did around Tempe Town Lake a few weeks ago. I ran in my new pair of Xero Shoes, which is my latest phase in trying to undo a childhood of over-coddled, never-go-outside-without-shoes-on feet.

I can objectively say my feet have gotten stronger and the arches more arched. How? I've dropped a shoe size, having gone from 12 to 11½. If this sounds puzzling, consider that an additional lift of the foot arch effectively shortens the length of the foot, just like how the shortest distance between two points is not a healthy curve above the plantar fascia. I like to think of my newer, bigger arches as each giving me an additional ½-shoe-size-worth of natural shock absorption in my feet. But childhood deficiencies are hard to make up for.

JEC -- not even sure where to begin in responding to the alteration of shoe size, that is truly amazing and I am wondering if I could shrink the size of just my right foot such that it would match my left thus allowing for better fitting shoes upon purchase. I have one full size difference between them, but I refuse to pay for two pairs of shoes or personalized shoes. This means that my left foot has been shod with shoes one size too large for as long as I can remember. Anyway, my real intent of this comment is to ask what you think is on the upper foot and shin of the girl photographed getting a piggy-back ride on the Xero link you provided? My first thought is that it looks like the Rocktape/Kinesiology tape that some wear to alleviate various pains. Whether that is what it is or not the simple fact that someone, namely me, thought maybe that's what it was leads me to believe that it may not be the best picture for them to showcase so prominently considering their soft cause.

Bobby et al.— I have no idea what's on the woman's leg. There's a ‘contact’ number at the bottom of the page. Maybe you should ask!

As for differing foot sizes, I'm disappointed it's the year 2015 and we still can't buy shoes individually. I understand that when buying from a brick-and-mortar shoe store that we must buy both the left and right shoe, but when ordering online—which means the shoes come from a warehouse—what's so hard or expensive about separating the shoes into two boxes and letting us buy them separately? And the upside to buying shoes separating is huge for people like you and me who have feet that are different sizes.

Great point, I am now frustrated by that fact as well. As for the mystery of what is on that woman's leg, I will call, though I doubt the answer will be easily obtained. We shall see.
