After two years of thinking about it, two months of procrastinating doing anything with it, two weeks of building it, and then two years of using it, I spent two days dismantling and discarding my homemade bike rack. It's the end of an era. Fortunately, my professional experience as a software developer provides me immense resolve to throw away something that took a lot of time and hard work to make. I'm calling it a refactoring job. The new plan is to buy a simpler rack that holds two bikes—one above the other—and takes up less space.

I threw out the wood but would like to find a good home for the nuts and bolts—as well as the washers and hooks.

JEC -- A MOST appreciated Post, thank you. First of all, well done as that dismantling was nearly as impressive as the construction. Secondly, it is a shame that the era had to end...I wondered just how long it would last given that the angles were against it. Finally, are you allowed to screw those hooks into the ceiling to take care of at least one of the bikes, leaving option to simply stand up the other beneth it?
Bobby et al.— I'm loath to drill big- or even medium-size holes into a wall or ceiling to hang a bike. My main concern is that the frequent taking down and hanging back up of the bike would cause the brittle drywall to break off in chunks, and then I would be forced to do some home repair, which, being a renter, is something I greatly resent doing.
