Funny movies for men and women

Few women appreciate Blazing Saddles for the brilliant movie it is. This isn't Mel Brooks's fault; most comedies appeal unevenly across gender. But there are exceptions.

Here's my tentative list of the five funniest non-romantic comedies that are equally funny to both men and women.

  • Groundhog Day
  • My Cousin Vinny
  • Toy Story, or just about any Pixar or Disney animated movie
  • The Princess Bride
  • The Mask

Please respond with your own additions or corrections to the list.

The Mask?!
If you are going to have a Jim Carey movie on the list, Liar Lair beats The Mask hands down for funny.

Anonymous— I'm unfamiliar with Liar Lair. Does it have something to do with funny lions?

But I remember watching a Jim Carrey movie called Liar Liar. It was a funnier movie than The Mask, but my impression is that Liar Liar appeals more to men than to women, and my list is of movies that are equally funny to both genders—or sexes, if you want to be pedantic.

That said, The Mask is the weakest movie on the list. It won the coin toss with Ferris Bueller's Day Off. I hope someone will point out some other possibilities.

JEC: It seems more difficult than I would have thought to come up with additions to your list for the simple reason that most comedies I think of have some aspect of romance involved. Like Groundhogs Day for instance.

I agree that it is more of a comedy than a romance, but I think you get my point...that stated, I'll list a few that, to me, seem to have similar ratio of Comedy to Romance as Groundhog Day:

Dumb and Dumber
The Jerk (don't even remember the Romance angle, but there was the lithe blond)
Old School (OK, I can't remember any romance in that one either, perhaps my list is applicable)
Tommy Boy

Bobby et al.— Yeah, if we allow Groundhog Day then we're allowing for some romance—just not comedies where romance is the focus. The Princess Bride also has a strong romantic theme, too, but I wouldn't call it a romance movie because it's also got fencing, fighting, torture, revenge, giants, monsters, chases, escapes, true love, and miracles—enough stuff to keep Fred Savage awake.

My guess is the four movies you mention are funnier to men than to women. But it occurs to me I say that about most comedies. Maybe I've got the wrong impression of what women find funny?

By the way, I love Tommy Boy. "What'd you do?"
